Tips For Driving In The Snow

December 7, 2017 by Jim Hensley Leave a Comment

Driving in the snow can be a difficult and aggravating task. However, it needs to be done. In order to get to your destination, you need to drive carefully in order to make it there crash-free in the slippery weather.

Unfortunately, many people do not know how to properly drive in the winter weather. This ignorance to the weather can cause an increase and accidents and injuries. Don’t be one of these unsafe winter drivers! Follow these tips provided by GM Outlet Parts and drive safely this winter season!

Slow and Steady

To all the speed demons out there – slow down! Driving fast in the snow is a quick way to injure someone, and makes you a big danger on the road. Even if you think your vehicle can handle the snow, slow down just in case. All it takes is one slippery patch to cause an accident.

It’s also important that you accelerate slowly. While speeding makes it hard to stop in the snow, accelerating too fast can cause your car to spin out if your tires don’t have a good grip. This means even parked cars around you are a target.

Increase Distance Between Cars

The last thing you should be doing in snowy weather is riding someone’s bumper. Even in dry weather, this can cause accidents that you would be at fault for. You should always be riding with at least three seconds between you and the car in front of you no matter the weather.

However, in snowy weather, you’ll want to increase this distance to about 7 or 8 seconds. This is because the slippery snow will cause your car to slide if you need to come to a sudden stop. You don’t want to be the cause of an easily avoidable accident!

Avoid Hills

If you live in an area that has hills, you may want to try to avoid them. These hills have both snow and gravity working against you which can cause your vehicle to go where you don’t want it. Even going up a hill can prove a challenge in snowy weather, especially if it’s a steeper hill. Try to avoid hills when driving in the snow.

Stay Home

If the weather is bad and the roads are slippery – stay home! Obviously, there are times when this isn’t an option, but if you can avoid it, don’t drive in this weather. Slippery roads mean a higher likelihood of accidents. Unfortunately, it doesn’t matter how well you drive – you may very well be a victim of someone else’s stupidity. Be safe – stay home if you can!

Driving in the snow can be a challenge. However, if you follow these tips for driving in snow, you will find yourself having an easier time. Need to update your vehicle for the winter weather? GM Outlet Parts has the parts you need at discount prices!
