It’s recently been announced that GM has teamed up with IBM to integrate Watson into its future line of vehicles. This is very exciting, as it could mean a lot for smart technology in cars. However, many people don’t quite understand why this deal is so important. Many people don’t really understand what IBM Watson is, and what it can do to better the driving experience.
What Is IBM Watson?
IBM Watson is a new technology that uses artificial intelligence to use natural language processing and machine learning to give information to the user. Think of an even smarter version of Siri. This technology is not limited to the mobile world, however. There are many different uses that IBM is targeting. This goes from anywhere to vehicles (GM) to robotic technology.
One major key benefit to Watson is that it can analyze unstructured data. This can include articles, Facebook posts, and system data. In fact, 80% of the world’s data presently is unstructured giving Watson a huge boost.
What Does This Mean for GM?
So new technology is always great, but what does it really mean for GM? Do people really need Watson when so many cars these days have Sync or Siri integration? Watson differs from these two already useful platforms because unlike Sync or Siri – Watson can learn.
By having Watson in your vehicle, not only will you be able to give it commands – it will also be able to help you based off of the status of your vehicle. For example, let’s say your cars low on gas. Watson can be able to tell this, and reroute your destination based off of traffic reports, and where the closest gas station is. Another example of this is the fact that Watson can learn your driving habits and learn based on them. So if you’re constantly stopping at the same restaurant on your way to work – Watson can pick up on this and make suggestions based on your daily paths.
