GM to Announce New Michigan Investments at Detroit Economic Club

General Motors CEO Mary Barra’s announcement in late October serves to illustrate the company’s profoundly increasing commitment to Detroit. General Motors has invested over $11 billion in the U.S. in the last few years, and nearly half that amount has been invested in Michigan. This recent announcement conveys GM’s plans to help Detroit retain its well-deserved status as the “Motor City”.

GM’s Commitment to the Detroit Michigan Automotive Industry

By investing in vehicle electrification, GM is also helping to secure the future of the industry in Michigan. GM’s Warren Transmission Plant is to be responsible for constructing the electric drive unit that will be used in the second-generation version of the Volt by Chevrolet. This translates into good news for Michigan because a major percentage of the powertrain components in the Volt will consequently be made in the state. This commitment also ensures that Michigan will serve as the hub of vehicle electrification engineering for GM.

Innovative Vehicle Electrification Projects

General Motors has implemented some of the nation’s most innovative electrification endeavors. This innovation has been made possible by about $1.82 billion already invested in an assortment of vehicle electrification projects. These projects have generated jobs and stimulated the economy in a variety of Michigan locations. Cumulatively, close to 70,000 Volts have been sold, making it the top-selling vehicle of its kind in the U.S.
General Motors is a leading company in the global automotive industry. GM continues to produce the groundbreaking vehicles that its customers expect. The state of Michigan will continue to be involved with and benefit from GM’s success.
