When we watch a car commercial, horsepower always gets mentioned. It seems to be one of the main selling points of vehicles. The more horsepower a vehicle has, the better it looks in the consumers’ eyes. However, does horsepower actually matter? How many uses does more horsepower have? Do we need to have an absurd amount of horsepower for our vehicles to be considered useful? Today GM Outlet Parts will be going through this and more.
What Is Horsepower?
Horsepower measure the amount of pounds can be moved in one minute. For example, 33,000 pounds moving one foot in one minute is equal to one horsepower. The more horsepower a vehicle has, the more weight can be moved.
This formula for horsepower has been around for hundreds of years, and has became a standard unit of measurement for vehicles. It’s especially popular for large vehicles such as trucks and SUVs.
Should Horsepower Matter to You?
Now that the definition of horsepower is known, the question is: does it matter it you? Horsepower is great, but is a high amount relevant to your needs? That all depends on who you are, what you do and what your vehicular needs are.
Essentially, the more horsepower you have the more weight you can move in a faster time period. It doesn’t necessarily mean your car is going to move any faster than other cars – but it will be able to move more efficiently with weight.
More horsepower is only important if you have a purpose for it. If you don’t plan on hauling huge loads, then horsepower will mean very little to you after a certain point. However, if you do things such as farming or camping with a trailer, the extra horsepower will be useful. While many car companies use horsepower as a huge buzzword in their advertising – it’s really only useful for a handful of people.
Horsepower is a term that generates reaction. It’s used to get people excited about a new car, to make it sound powerful. While horsepower has its uses – it really only applies to people who are hauling lots of weight. So when you’re deciding on your every day driving vehicle, don’t let horsepower be the deciding factor.
