Make Sure Everyone Is Okay
If you’ve been in an accident – no matter how small – the first thing you should do is make sure all who are involved are okay. Safety is always the number one priority. Even if you’ve been involved in a small fender bender, make sure you check on everyone as you never know the situation.
After you’ve made sure everyone is in good health, look around the accident scene to make sure no one is in danger. Oncoming traffic may not see the accident scene, which can often result in pile-ups. Make sure everyone is away from danger!
Exchange Information, Take Photographs
Always, always, always exchange your information with the involved party. Often times in a small fender-bender people will look around the car, not see any damage and go on their way thinking that all was okay. However, a few days later you may notice a crack in the bumper, or a leak on the ground. Now what do you do? Because you didn’t exchange information, you must suffer the consequences.
When exchanging information, never start with an apology. It may be natural reaction do to your politeness, but in the case of a car accident, an apology could be seen as an admission of guilt. Exchange information, make sure everyone’s okay – but do not apologize.
It’s also a good idea to take photographs of the scene. This way you can make sure that the police/courts have something to work with if it comes to that point. Without evidence, you don’t have an argument.
Call Your Insurance Company
Yes, dealing with insurance companies can be a pain in the butt. However, after an accident, it’s something that needs to be done. Bite the bullet and get this step over with – otherwise, a slew of other things can go wrong if the insurance company finds out you hid the accident, especially if you were at fault.
A car accident is not a fun experience for anybody. However, it can be made much worse if you don’t know what to do after a car accident. Just remember – stay calm. Accidents happen to the best of us, just make sure you stay collected afterward.
